Walked down to the river where we go tubing in the summer. Luckily the water was below the bridge this time. Still really strong flow. Just a beautiful, quiet day today. Light breeze and headed for 70 degrees. 64 degrees now and 26% humidity...nice!
I also found a really cool piece of driftwood in the river. As it's drying you can see it's pretty heavily mineralized, with thousands of crystals glinting in the sunlight.
First is the hydraulic ram pump that's been in operation for years. It's just for show now, because the have a powered well here. Besides, the water absolutely REEKS of hydrogen sulphide (that good ol' rotten egg smell) and you wouldn't want it at your campsite. The old water tower is still there tho.
Next is the namesake palmettos that are everywhere here.
The Refectory is a neat structure. Built in the 1930's by the CCC, it's still solid. The San Marcos river goes right by the place and is a nice overlook. The central area is spacious and has lots of ceiling fans...although I'm not sure how much help those are in the summer. Really nice craftsmanship on fitting the wood decking up to the stonework. Someone spent a fair bit of time getting it perfect.
I started off with the 20T pinion in there, and man does it haul butt! Then I switched it into second gear and WOW it was really too fast for the street. I also discovered that when you scrape a titanium skid on the street at night, you get nice white sparks. The slipper was slipping a bit much, so I tightened it down (mistake #1!) about 5 - 7 minutes after that, I stripped the idler gear in 1st. I noticed the car was going a bit choppy, checked diffs, they were fine, but tranny = shot. Gotta strip it down.
This is going to be a seriously fun R/C.
